Getting out of Low Productivity

Low productivity can drive us into a vicious cycle.

Low productivity > Feeling low, stuck > Nothing getting done > Low productivity.

It's a no-brainer that every single day can't be a productive day for us. We all have unproductive days. But, there's a chance to fall into the vicious cycle. So, how do I get out of this cycle?

Firstly, I try to stay aware if I am in it. When I recognise my productivity is taking a hit and so is my energy, I accept the day as unproductive. I stop what I am working on, and go around Zoom breakout rooms, observing my colleagues work on their projects and participate in their discussions, wherever I can.

This usually leads to one of the following outcomes :

1. I contribute my ideas/views to others' projects. I ask questions to understand the project better, which in turn, helps them to gain clarity on what they are working on, if nothing else.

There you go! Now I have something to lessen the unproductivity of the day.

2. When I abstract out where I am getting stuck in my work and ask around to gather ideas, sometimes, I find heuristics from others. Again, if nothing, questions from others help me in thinking clearly, or improve my articulation.

3. Going around other Labs at DT gives me a bigger picture of how my work fits in, connects me to the purpose of my project all over again.

This can actually bring in a fresh perspective, renew our motivation, and boost our energy levels.

In a nutshell, to beat an unproductive day, I accept the day as it is and go hunting for low-hanging fruits - something which would replenish my energy. The above pointers might not be the best reasons to celebrate a day... but we have a saying at DeepThought...

"Celebrate your productive days, but on other days, celebrate harder!"
